It was totally a new experience to me to participate in an online contest that too based on travel photos. I had not travelled to various parts of the world. I had visited other two states in India other than Kerala. But I finally decided to participate with my favourite photos. Then comes the interesting point of the game. After that I went through the other entries to the contest. I virtually travelled through the world. Amazing photos and captions are also commentable.

Hari, Achu and Soorya on the hill top. One thing I noticed that here its effortless to reach this top point. When I went to Ramakkalmedu it was a painful effort to reach the highest peak. For adventurous trekking experience my suggestion will be Ramakkalmedu...

It was not a pre planned trip to Parunthum para. It is a hill station in Idukki District of Kerala. It is in Peerumedu Taluk. Nearly 80Km from Kottayam town. Through the way we can see rubber plantations, tea plantations and the rich greenery of Western ghats.
It was a rainy evening. We can not spend much time because of raining and lightning. Vehicles can reach the hill top. Its a cool place with calm and serene atmosphere.
Grazing cows, sharp edged rocks and grassy lands makes this a popular tourist centre. 'Parunthu' means eagle and 'para' means rock. Another unexplored scenic spot from High range. From the hill top we can see mountains covered with snow. Small tea shops 'Chayakkada' with hot tea and ethnic snacks of Kerala are also there. There are no barricades in the hill top because of that we have to care more about the children, didn't allowed them to play and wander. Anyway its a nice location for a joyous week end. This location is also known as 'Grampi'.

Whenever we enter into High range area we can feel the fresh air and taste the fresh water with the natural cooling.

' Kaypan kadu' common plant at idukki with lovely yellow flower. Its leaves have bitter taste thus the name 'kaypan kadu'.

Scenic beauty at the dam. 'Uruli' means a type of big vessel in bronze and 'Anchu' means five. It is believed that there are five hills in the dam area in the shape of five large vessels inverted(uruli) . We can not see them because they were immersed in water.

Anchuruli is a wonderful picnic spot at Idukki District of Kerala. Its nearly 9Km from the famous town Kattappana. Its an extension of Idukki dam. Here we can see a tunnell of 6km length passing through a huge mountain!!!!!This may be the centre of attraction of this spot.

This tunnel is used to carry water from a river known as 'erattayar' to Idukki dam. Another tunnel is also there in Kallar to carry water to Idukki dam.

Karkkidaka and Ramayana

In Kerala during Karkkidaka month its a ritual of hindus to read Ramayana. Ramayana tells the story of Sri rama who is the incarnation of Sri Mahavishnu. When we go through this book we can see relations and problems in our life. Even though Sri rama was the incarnation of god he suffered lot of problems in his life. The reading of Ramayana will start on the first day of Karkkidaka and ends on the last day of the month.
Karkkidaka is the rainy season in Kerala. Its also the time for Aayurvedic rejuvanation. According to Ayurveda we must take prevention to illness during this season. As a part of that prevention 'marunnu kanji' porridge made with rice and medicine is taken and ladies adorn their hair with 'Dashapushpam'. We must take more leaves in this season. 'Pathilakkari' a curry made with ten leaves is also a special dish of this time.
Ramayana reading cleanses our mind too. We can hear ramayana from temples. Aakashvani and TV channels transmit various programs based on Ramayana. Ramayana reading of Kavalam Sreekumar is excellent. Ramayana is written in Sanskrit by the saint Valmiki. We read Adhyatma Ramayana written by Thunjath Ramanujan Ezhuthachn based on Valmiki Ramayana. Ezhuthachan wrote this as 'Kilipattu' a parrot is the main character telling the story of Ramayana.

Kandas in Ramayana

1. Balakanda
Balakanda starts with salute to Ganapathi, Saraswathi and Brahmadeva. Through this kanda we can read the birth of Sri rama and brothers.
2. Ayodhya kanda
This kanda we can read the magnificent description of the marriage of Sri rama and brothers. In this we can see the cruelty of Kaikeyi and Manthara who opposes the crowning of Sri rama.
3. Aaranya kanda
As the name indicates its the life in forest. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana meets saints living in the forest and they choose a permanent shelter inside the forest. The golden deer of Maricha and Ravana comes at the end. Kidnapping of Sita is the main happening in this kanda.
4. Kishkindaha kanda
In this comes Sugreeva, bali and hanuman. Kishkindha is their country name.
5. Sundara kanda
This kanda mainly explains the activites of Hanuman. Its a tough task to read this kanda.
6. Yudha kanda
It explains Rama Ravana yudha. At last Sri rama returns to Ayodhya with Sita Lakshmana and Hanuman.

When we go through it daily we can see more spiritual principles hidden in this story. Our perceptions change every day. Ramayana is our holibook. We must salute the book before we must start reading. Stick to vegetarianism during this month. All these rituals keep our mind and body healthy.

Thirunelli temple

Temple known as Dakshin Kashi is in Wayanad district of Kerala. Thirunelli rests at the base of Brahmagiri hills which is a part of Sahyadri ranges. The chief diety is of Mahavishnu. A spring which is connected to the temple is Papanashini. It is believed that by immersing the mortal remains in this river will free that soul from bondages.

According to legends Brahmadeva installed the idol. Before that the idol was resting on the top of an Amla tree or nelli maram(Indian gooseberry). Thus the name Thirunelli. Throughout the journey we can enjoy the unspoilt beauty of nature.

Thenmala is a famous tourist location in Kollam District of Kerala. It is the first eco tourism project in India.
Thenmala dam is the main attracation in this project. Dam built across Kallada River is under Kallada Irrigation project. The view of the dam from 'Ottakkal lookout' is marvellous. Kerala tourism Department had made necessary arrangements to enjoy the beauty of forest with all its calmness.

Here we can select the package that suit to our needs. Thenmala eco tourism promotion society has arranged several packages to exploit every area of this land. We can walk through the walk ways in the forest and watch 36 statues which shows the relation between human and nature along the walk ways in thick forest. After that we can climb the hanging bridge. From this the adventure zone begins. Then comes the elevated walk way. Then we have the trekking facility, rope way across the lake, observe the forest from the tree house(erumadam). There we can feel the nature in its raw form which include meadows filled with unknown flowers, small streams, rocky areas, small walkways and many more. Deers have a special park here. We can have a boating in the Parappar dam and have a close look at the wild life sanctuary and enjoy the musical fountain accompanied by the enchanting illumination. We may have bird watch in this area.

Shenduruny wild life sanctuary is also included in this project. Another main attraction is Palaruvi water falls. Its only 16Km from Thenmala. At Palaruvin water falls from 300 feet height. We may have a bath in the pure water.

Other attractions are Achan kovil, Manalar, Kumbhavurutti water falls, Achan kovil-Aryankavu-Kulathoorpuzha pilgrim tourism etc.

Chinese fishing nets from Vypin. Popularly known as 'Cheena vala' is the icon of Kochi. It is believed that this type of fishing was introduced by Chinese traders, thus got the name 'Chinese fishing nets'.
Last Sunday we went to Vypin just for an outing. We visited the beach where the Vembanad lake and Arabian sea meets. Scenic beauty was enough to attract people but the beach was not clean and mosquito density compelled us to walk away from that beautiful place. We can walk through the walkway and from their we can see the ships coming from the outer sea and we can also see the port trust, fort kochi and marine drive. It was a nice evening through the Goshree bridges. In one side excellant view of trendy kochi on another side hectic infrastructure development of Vallarpadam transhipment terminal.

We also visited Pizza Hut. It was my first experience with a pizza. Frankly I didn't like the taste. But the restaurant was full even kids were busy with the pizzas, garlic bread, masala soda etc.

Again Vacations. Children free from daily routines and homeworks.. Nowadays before the start of vacations we can see several advertisements announcing swimming classes, roller skating camps, Yoga courses, training in various art forms, Theatre camps, Painting workshops, Personality development programs, grammer coaching etc No one has time to waste as vacation. Moreover everyone is planning every day of life for better use of time.

Whenever I think about vacations it was not preplanned in my school days and we have the freedom to read, play and spend the time as we like. But now I am worrying about my son's vacation time. How to manage them tactfully ...

During vacations I spent most of my time in my father's home at Thalavady, my chitta's home at Chambakkulam and my valyachan's home at Thrikkodithanam. My parents were working so to avoid loneliness they send us to these homes. I liked it because we can learn different items to play from our cousins, we can see other places and some times I feel sad to see my mother. But now I think parents are becoming more possessive. Its a good thing to separate your child to a close relative's home for a few days. He can see other places and also he will become more close with his cousins.

Vacation time may be used to feel the nature more closely. They can collect different types of leaves and fruits. We can collect them from roads, grounds or parks. Making them more close to nature is the biggest thing we can do to the mother earth. Everything is new to them, so we can spend this vacation with nature. To know nature, to love nature and to nurture nature....

Through vacation camps children can master in a skill or an art form , but it must be according to their taste. Don't pressurise them to attend such classes, it will just spoil the spirit of these camps. Working parents have no time to spend with their child, then this type of camps will be a relief to them. They can broaden their friendship circle through these activities.

It was a blissful experience for me to have a devine presence on the most auspicious day. Early morning we attended Sudarshan kriya led by poojya Guruji. Early morning and the cool breeze made us more relaxed after the kriya. After that Guruji gave Darshan through the ramp.
In the evening it was a massive gathering from all over Kerala. Rudra pooja was the main event. After that Satsang, which was superb and the singers made an atmosphere of Kailasa in that maidan. We can feel the vigour and devotion of people. Everyone was trying to have a look at poojya Guruji. He explained the meaning of 'Shiva thathva'. He sang 'Nirvanashtakam'. Anyway it may be the largest spiritual gathering at Kerala. Crowd include AOL members from all over the country and 20 representatives from other countries.

Shoolam or vel is the weapon of Sri velayudah swamy. Kavadi is the festival commemmorating the victory of Sri muruga over narakasura.

This dance is performed with artificial legs. The dancer will make up like the peacock. Peacock is the vehicle of Sri muruga. So this dance is an inevitable part of Kavadi festival.

Thai pooya kavadi is the most prominent festival of Sree Subrahmanya swamy temple situated at Perunnai in Kottayam District of Kerala. Two day festival includes mainly Kavadi aattom and Kavadi vilakku. Devotees carry Kavadi's (with special offerings to their diety) on their shoulders and dance rhythamatically according to the Melam. 'Hara haro hara hara' is the main slogan of this procession.Kavadi's are decorated with artificial flowers(chendu) and mainly with 'Mayilpeeli'. Karpooram, Bhasmam, honey, milk, gingelly oil, panineer and Karikku are the main offerings along with the kavadi. This will be used for 'Abhishekam' (Pouring from the top of the idol). For this ritual devotees must avoid non vegetarian food and must take 'vratham' for 10 days. Kavadis must take after 'Hidumban pooja'.

Arjuna's penance

This brilliant bas-relief, hailed as one of the major glories of Indian art and the largest in the world, is a huge rock canvas (96feet long and 43 feet high) with chisel sketches of the denizens of the triple world of Gods and demi-gods, of human beings, birds and animals and of Nagas and Nymphs-all fitting harmoniously into the theme of penance of Arjuana.

This beautiful cave is known for carved panels portraying mythological scenes. Above portrait pallava artists portrayed glory of Durga over buffalo headed demon Mahishasura.

The monuments are broadly in the form of Monoliths, most of which are called Rathas(Chariots), rock-cut caves excavated from hillocks, structural temples and bas-reliefs carved on hill edge.

Mahabalipuram is 60Km south of Chennai. It is an ancient seaport of the pallavas, who ruled from nearby Kancheepuram between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. According to inscriptions, the marvellous monuments found here are the sculptural legacy left behind by Pallava Kings Mahendravarman, his son Narasimhavaraman and their descendents. Mahendravaraman was a renowned patron of fine arts and devoted his time and wealth to nurture these arts. He was greatly influenced by the carvings and sculptures of Ajanta and Ellora of early Chalukyas. Mahabalipuram is also popularly known as Mamallapuram. This name may be derived from the King Narasimhavaraman, he was a renowned wrestler. It was a thriving business centre and meeting place of traders from different parts of the world. The famous chinese traveller Heun Tsang had recorded about this port in his travelogues.

Deepavali means 'Aavali'(koottam) of deepams(lights). Its the celebration of the victory over narakasura by Sree krishna. Anyway lights always brings positive energy to our mind and in the atmosphere. On Deepavali we always prefer 'chirathu' lamps made of clay. Lighting the lamp with gingelly oil removes all negative energy in the surroundings also. Its the day of sweets and lights. Children enjoy the day with fire crackers.

'Chirathu' or 'idinjil' brings abundance to our home.

Uthrittathi boat festival of Aaranmula

Aranmula is situated on the banks of Pamba river, in Pathanamthitta District of Kerala. The famous snake boat race in the river during Onam festival is famous because of its traditions and spectacular beauty. The race is held on the Uthrittathi asterism in Chingam (August-September) month.
The chundan vallams participating in the festival are known as 'Palliyodams'(meaning boats of the diety). There may be more than 40 chundan vallams participating in this festival. The front portion of the chundan vallam will be tapered gradually. It is believed than the diety is supposed to be in all the boats and so they are treated with great devotion. Palliyodams are worshipped whether in water or on land. Ladies are not allowed to step into this boats. The oarsmen maintain extreme purity both in mind and body.
It is believed that the palliyodams are built for the protection of the 'Thiruvonathoni' which brings food materials from Mangat illom, 8Km east of Aranmula, to the Parthasarathy temple for the Thiruvona sadya to be served in the temple.
The chundan vallom which is more than 100ft long is an admirable showpiece of Kerala's perfection in craftsmanship and skill. The craftsmen got the skill from their ancestors. Few families from Kuttanadu and Ranni are skilled in making wonderful snake boats. The extra ordinary skill, imagination and intelligence applied by the craftman of Kerala in constructing the beautiful palliyodams had won universal admirations.
To offer feast to the palliyodam is considered as an offering to the diety. Its also a unique feature of Aranmula palliyodam.
Vanchipattu or boat songs used in this boat race are mostly devotee songs. The famous 'kuchelavritham vanchipattu' written by Ramapurathu warrier is a great work in this field.
Uthruttathi boat race, vallasadya and ashtami rohini vallasadya are organised by a voluntary organisation called Palliyoda sevasangham a voluntary organisation by the locals.
Aaranmula has declared as heritage village by India Government. Kumbalangi village in Ernakulam district is the another village from Kerala which got the heritage village title. Through this title they can exploit the potential of tourism through participating the natives of the village. Vasthu vidya gurukulam is another famous institution in Aranmula which promote traditional architecture of Kerala.

Aaranmula a village in Kerala is famous for 'Uthruttathi vallam kali' snake boat race and the 'Aaranmula Kannadi' the famous metal mirror. These two have relations with the temple of Mahavishnu (Parthasarathy) located in Aaranmula on the banks of Pamba river.
Aaranmula may be the only place in world where this unique work in metal is made. It is made by a combination of copper and white lead in right proportions. This is done by few viswakarma families in Aaranmula and the proportion of the mixture is still kept as a secret.
Story related to the origin of the mirror is like this. Centuries ago some viswakarma families from Tamilnadu were invited by the king for the construction of Aaranmula temple and for making pooja lamps and vessels. After some days they became very lazy then the king withdraw the facilities being given to them. Then they made the wonderful mirror to please the king. They believe that the miracle happened due to the blessings of 'Aaranmulayappan'. Now they are in the form of 'Valkannadi'. Its a main pooja article in Ashtamangalyam. It is also considered as a sacred object in wedding ceremonies and for arranging 'vishukkani'.
Method of making
Copper and white lead are mixed in a particular ratio, melted and poured into a clay mould and made into a non reflecting metal object. The metal plant is then tightened with lac and put into a wooden frame. It is then placed on a surface on which sack is spread. Oil is applied on this. The object is then softened on this surface. The final touches are given with soft, velvet like cloth. The reflection from mercury filled Belgian glass is from the back but in aranmula mirrors reflection is from the surface itself. Thus we get refraction free images from Aranmula mirror.
Its a wonderful handicraft item from India in foreign market. Its also used as an important object for presenting to eminent personalities.

Atlast Kerala had taken steps to tap the non conventional energy resources to tackle the energy crisis of Kerala. The Government is planning to generate 100MW of electricity from wind power in two years. Ramakkalmedu project will generate 10.5MW power. 14 units are ready in Ramakkalmedu section and started power transfer to KSEB's Kallar substation.

Neelamperoor pooram padayani festival is a fascinating experience in which skill, devotion and unity of a whole village resembles. The festival is at Palli bhagawathy temple of Neelamperoor a village located 6Kms from Kottayam in Kerala. Temple 3Km west of the Kurichi Outpost in between Kottayam and Changanacherry in MC Road. The temple is of Vanadurga. The temple has a history of 1700 years. It is believed that Cheraman Perumal is the founder of this Devi temple. The rituals connected with the festival have roots from the Budhist culture.
The festival is celebrated in 10 days. 'Kettukazhcha' is the main spectacular event of this festival. Huge Swans are made of fibreous part of plantain and it is decorated with petals of chethi flower. These swans are offered to the temple as a thanks to the diety by the devotees. The big swan may of 45feet height. Above all its a festival of the whole village. Villagers nurture even flowers for the padayani. Every festival in Kerala links us with the nature.

Karkkidkam is a holy month for keralites. Its the month of Ramayana and its also the month of Ayurvedic rejuvanation. From today Ramayana can be heard from most of the homes in Kerala. We start the reading of the book after 7pm on the first day of Karkkidakam. First of all we have to remember Ganapathi to remove the obstacles. After lighting the 'vilakku' a plate full of aval, malar, fruits and sharkara will be placed in front of the vilakku for Ganapathi. Then we start reading Ramayana. Its a part of my life. Ramayana gives me energy to do more good things in this short span of life. We must stick on to vegetarianism during these 30 days. Bath in the early morning is also compulsory in these days. In these days Dashapushpam(10 sacred flowers )will decorate hair and the juice of Mukkutti plant is placed as bindi on the forehead.

Paragliding attracts a lot of tourists at Kolahalamedu, 4Km from Vagamon. This area is known as Amruthamedu, south India's second highest peak. This venture opens a new phase to the Kerala tourism.

An international paragliding festival was arranged at Kolahalamedu by Tourism Department and Adventurous Sports and Sustainable Tourism academy(ASST). The spot is 3000meters above sea level and the wind conditions are also helpful to the gliders. This attempt is aimed to attract tourists based on activity tourism. The tourism of Kerala mostly rely on Ayurveda, scenic places, festivals and boat rides. They are planning to start an academy for paragliding at Kolahalamedu.

My ammoomma was always busy throughout these years. Still she remembers her days with Appooppan. Appooppan's home was at Chingoly in Karthikappally. It is a typical village with unending paddy fields and palm groves. Now she always recollect some episodes with a smile in her face. Appooppan got a job at Mannam sugar mill at Pandalam. She also accompanied him there they lived in a rental house. After his death she stayed with her father at Perunna in Mannathu house. Then she had to care her mother. Her mother was from Kochu veli. Her home was very near to the famous Karikkakam devi temple. Then she had to do all the house chores without any modern amneties. Ammoomma had done all her duties to the life. She cared me so much. Whenever her thought sprouts in my mind it will end up in tears. We can not materialise our love towards everyone sometimes it may end in tears. We have to give more care to elder people who spend their youth to the uplifting of the family. According to me if we spend some time with them it will be far better than religious rituals.
Now she is very weak. This post is for my beloved ammoomma praying to god for her good mental and physical health.

Kuttanadu is a wonderful place of Kerala, it is the lowest region of India. Here the farming is carried out below sea level. The place offers a close view of unending rivers, canals, palm fringed paddy fields, fisher men in small boats called vallams and big house boats having all luxuries etc. Tharavu (Duck) is an inevitable part of Kuttanadu culture. Four rivers flow into the Kuttanadu, Pamba, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala.
Through out the journey we can see flock of ducks crossing the rivers and resting in the paddy fields. On either side of the road there are a lot of stalls selling ducks. 'Tharavu roast' is a main dish in Kuttanadu.

We can see golden coloured paddy fields, indicating the harvest time.

Then a decorated vehicle will carry them to the Ilankavu temple accompanied by the devotees and the procession will last for 2-3 hours. The house will be illuminated like a wedding house and there will be a grand feast for all the relatives and the natives. There will be a number of thookkams in a year and it is an expensive offering too. Kali and Darika war is the legend behind the thookkam. This procession is taking place in night and it is a spectacular event. This ethnic art forms make us more creative, more energetic and more patriatic through their uniqueness and inspiring legends.
Elankavu temple festival 'Aattuvela' is famous for its spectacular beauty. The legend behind this festival is that the Kodungalloor devi is visiting to the temple, kodungalloor devi is considered as the elder sister of Elankavilamma. The great procession in water accompanied by the percussion music is to welcome kodungalloor devi. The replica of temples are arranged in canoes, and they will come to the temple as a procession from the aattuvela kadavu, 2 Km from the temple.

Most of the workers in tea plantations are Tamilians. We can see women plucking the tea leaves . All of them will have a bag over their back. This bag carries the collected leaves.

Masala Dosha a very common dish in Kerala. Doshas filled with spicy vegetables with sambar and chutney...The ideal smell evokes the hunger in us..I think it may have the origins in Tamil Nadu. I had not tried it yet in my kitchen.

An email of my dearest friend evoked this question. I had already two tots and we are not at all bothered about the number but god blessed us with two children. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic, and those who do not conform to our thinking must be criticized and steered to the right direction, our direction.This kind of attitude on our part denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence of God, for God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do because they are prompted to do so by the Divine within them. There is God to look after everything. Why are you bothered? Mind your own business and you will have your peace.
2. Forget and forgive: This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often nurture ill feeling inside our heart for the person who insults or harms us. We foster grievances, which in turn results in loss of sleep, develops of stomach ulcer, high blood pressure and many other ailments that stealthily gnaws us from within.We forget that the insult or injury was done to us once but by nourishing the grievance we go on excavating the wound forever. Therefore it is essential that we cultivate the art of forgiving and forgetting. Believe in the justice of God and the doctrine of Karma. Let Him judge the act of the one who insulted you. Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forget, forgive, and march on.
3. Do not crave for recognition: This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without selfish motive. They may praise you today because you are rich and have power but no sooner you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and start criticizing you.Moreover, each person is a mortal with a bundle of defects in them. No one individual is picture perfect. Then why do you value the words of praise of another mortal like you? Why do you crave for such false recognition and lose your peace of mind if the world does not praise you? Believe in yourself. People's praises do not last long and are not worth it. Do your duties ethically and sincerely and leave the rest to God.
4. Do not be jealous: We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know you work harder than your colleagues in the office but they get promotions, you do not. You started a business several years ago but you are not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year old. There are several examples like these in every walk of life. Should you be jealous? No, remember everybody's life is shaped by his previous Karma that has now become his destiny. If you are destined to be rich, not all the world can stop you. If you are not so destined, no one can help you either. Nothing will be gained by blaming others for your misfortune. Jealousy will not get you anywhere, but will only give you restlessness.
5. Change yourself according to the environment: If you try to change the environment single handedly, the chances are you may fail. Instead, change yourself to suit the environment. As you do this, even the environment, which has remained unfriendly for you, will mysteriously appear to be congenial and harmonious.
6. Endure what cannot be cured: This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations and accidents that are beyond our control. We must learn to put up with these things. We must learn to endure them cheerfully thinking, "God will it so, so be it". God's logic is beyond our comprehension. Believe it and you will gain in patience, in inner strength, in will power.
7. Do not bite more than you can chew: This maxim should be always remembered. We often tend to take more responsibilities than we are capable to carry out. This is done to satisfy our ego. Know your limitations. Why take on additional loads that may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external activities. If you have extra time, then spend it in an inward life of prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind, which make you restless. Fewer the thoughts, greater is the peace of mind.
8. Meditate regularly: Meditation makes the mind thoughtless. This is the highest state of peace of mind. Try and experience it. If you meditate earnestly for half an hour every day, you will tend to become calm during the remaining twenty-three and a half hours. Your mind will not be disturbed as much as before. You must gradually increase the period of daily meditation. You may think this will interfere with your daily work. On the contrary, this will increase your efficiency and you will turn out more work in less time.
9. Never leave the mind vacantEmpty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil deeds start in the mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile. Actively follow a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. You must decide what you value more - money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work or temple work may not always earn you more money, but you will have a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even if you are resting physically, occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name (japa).
10. Do not procrastinate and never regret: Do not waste time in wondering "should I or shouldn't I?" Days, weeks, months and years may be wasted in that futile mental debating. You can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all future happenings. Always remember God has His own plan too. Value your time and do things. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can rectify your mistakes and succeed the next time. Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET! Whatever happened was destined to happen only that way. Take it as the will of God. You do not have the power to alter the course of God's will. Why cry over the spilt milk?

This topic had evolved from my son's never ending cough and fever problems. After a lot of lab tests doctor came into the conclusion that the illness repeats due to the pollution. He is spending 2 hours in school van every day. Some days he will be late due to traffic blocks. I walked to my school which was one kilometer away from my home. I feel very sorry about my child suffering such illness due to the city culture. A habit or a hobby that keeps you more worthy person. It is a mental exercise that uses our brain and it is a life skill. I am not a voracious reader. But I have an interest in reading since from childhood. I have a friend who is very much talented in electronics. He will always do some repairing activities with a great pleasure. He enjoys every minute of his work. This type of passion brings out all the hidden energy in you.

Sharpen your skills-You have to work hard to polish your skills to reach your goal.

I had a neighbour with a vibrant personality. She was a house wife and depends her husband for shopping. One day she reached in a decision to study driving. She had not even the cycle balance. At first she started with his daughter's cycle. After one week she managed the cycle and started to study Kinetic honda. Within one month she got the learners licence and now she had become an expert driver. The drive in her mind helped her to master all the difficulties.

Focus on your merits- Every one has some excellant qualities and some negatives. Always be proud of your potentials. Every man have a lot of limitations. Focus on your strong points and not the weak ones.

You can write down your capacities like I can listen to others happily, I can help others with joy, I can enjoy the nature with full of love in my heart, I can keep my house neat and clean etc. This type of writing habit increases your self potential.

Exercises-Exercises increases the blood circulation and oxygen level of our body, this will re energises you.

My neighbour is very particular about to play badminton in early morning. I have noticed his sense of humour and calmness in the midst of all problems. He always stress the role of exercises in his daily life.

Meditation-Absorbing into the real person in you. It makes the body and mind calm and quiet. It is a method used by our ancient sages. Now the modern culture changed its shape and size to suit to the global village. Anyway its a stress repellant and easy to use energy tapper.
Prayer-Pray to almighty to enable us to do something useful, memorable and using our talents. Prayer evolves from gratitude. It has no laws and language. The real prayer comes from the helplessness of mind. A sincere prayer is enough to save your life.

Our epics had a lot of stories about the true devotees of the Guruvayurappa. Whatever be the god the devotion is the true love from an innocent heart and believing without questionning or logic. Kururamma and shabari are very fine examples of the pure devotion. When I think about the enormous potential we have, I always remember a story (which I read in Amar chitra katha in my child hood days) of a woman who sells milk. In that days there will be a kotta for every kingdom it has compound walls, huge doors and securities for each door. One day she was very late after her business and the door closed . Then she became very anxious about her child at her home then she decided to climb down the mountain. At that night she climbed down the steep mountain. The next day she became astonished by seeing the height of the mountain in the day light then she asked herself what made me to do such a risky task without faults..the love towards her child and the energy inside her helped her to complete such a risky task.

Have a deep friend ship- Friends can point out the positives in you. Find some time to spend with your friend. This will make your mind more lighter and acceptable.

I am very honestly keeping some good friends. E mails and phone calls from them are real energy boosters for me. Our life span is very short, so don't try to shut all windows and doors, open them wide you will surely get the cool breeze of love, laughter and heart felt wishings from your supportive relations from this world.

Family matters the most-A peace ful family is the large sign of positiveness in you. Accepting your parents views, supporting husband and loving the children according to me these are the first things a woman must possess to win success in the life.
Imagine yourself as a successful person-This imagination makes positive vibrations in the unconscious mind and surely the positive wonders will occur in your life.

I think it is not an easy thing to think positive always. But slowly you can build up the positiveness in you. Our thoughts make our lives. Every one is hoping for a better living, better job and better family. So to win the game of life you must become a positive thinker.
Our culture has a positive energy always. So you do not have to join a course to start positive thinking. Here are some points from my own experince....
The first and the most important thing is to rise early and have a good start. If you want to be more happy, more productive, more enthusiastic and more lovable try to rise early

Rise early- Wake up in early morning:According to Ayurveda "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise".

Rising in the early morning make me more comfortable and my mind fill with a lot of energy. You may take a bath and may go to a temple nearby. This will make you more and more positive. Start every day with a prayer to be positive always. From my childhood my parents insisted me to rise early. Then I considered it as a punishment. But now I realise that this habit make me to do my duties tactfully. If you rise early, you can finish cooking, washing and cleaning before 9am. You can have your breakfast around 8am.

Do not vegetate- Everyone has a great level of energy in us. Try to explore the talent in you.

I used to have a nap in the after noon and spent a lot of time in front of the TV. But now I enjoy blogging and now I am busy, hopeful, enthusiastic and more happy. Every day we have to cope with the depressive moments, usually I take the dictionary and try to study one word from it. This is an easy way to uplift your mood. Try to make three or more sentences with a word. These are from my experience, you can find your own ways and share it with your friends.

Take a deep breath- deep breaths give more oxygen, this stimulates more happy thinking.

I learned the benefits of breathing methods after the art of living courses. The most simple method of breathing is to take some deep breaths. More oxygen make our organs more healthy and deep breaths affect the blood pressure and cholestrol level. Deep breaths help us to evoke the positive attitude and innovative ideas. Walking in the open air in early morning is a positive gesture towards your better health.

After walking my father's cholestrol level decreased and his diabetics level is under control . Cycling, Swimming, Playing also increases the blood circulation and the positive energy in you.

Smile and laugh -Smile makes even chemical changes in our body. Don't waste time have a big smile always.

Make food with less spices and chilly. These two make us more aggressive. Your food habits have a lot of importance in your mind. Try to take more vegetables and fruits.

Stand up straight-your posture gives a positive confidence in you and you will be considered as someone more important. Always try to keep your back straight. This will give you more energy and confidence. You will feel better within seconds. Try it now!

Sing a song, a poetry, Draw a picture, make your favourite dish, dance for sometime...If you know any musical instruments, play it. This will energise and rejuvanate the positive power in you.

Absorb in nature-Sunset in the beach, heavy raining, cool breeze all remembers us the energy of the nature that controls us. These thoughts will fill your mind with gratitude and positive energy.

My husband is very busy in his field but finds some time to study 'Mridangam'. Every small appreciation from his teacher thrills him. It was his great desire to study Mridangam since from his childhood.

Try to clean your working atmosphere and your room periodically. A clean working environment induces the positive thinking in you.

Some people need an inspiration to understand their inner power. A story from 'Ramayana' is an example to this topic. A troop of monkeys Hanuman as the leader was in search of Sita devi who is under the custody of Ravana in Lanka. After a long journey they decide to cross the ocean to go to Lanka. Who will cross the ocean? After a long discussion Jambavan the seniormost from the troop remembering Hanuman his positive points and assure him he has the power to do it. After that Hanuman crosses the ocean. Hanuman is just like us. We need some positive interrupts for a better perception of our energy. This may be from friends, relatives or from colleagues.

Every day we came across this slogan 'Enjoy the life'. 'Live in the present moment' is the motto of Art of Living foundation. I had done my basic course 5 years back. Then I was suspicious about this statement, but now I think that it is the right thing that we can do in this world. Live in present and be happy always, we can not predict what is going to happen in the next moment and we can not correct the last moment, so have a smile and enjoy in what you are doing.
Every one is eager to do new things, new things make us happy. New ideas for better living. Now everyone is trying their fortunes in Real estate and Share business. If you have the will and a clear dream you can win and you will win. Whatever be the path, the job, the study it is all about the mind. You have all the power in you itself. Swami Vivekananda said"Arise, Awake and not stop until the goal is reached". An inspiration can change our life. According to me the most inspiring book is "Wings of Fire" by Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam. This book is an autobiography of Mr.Kalam. Mr.Arun Thiwari was a colleague of Mr.Kalam assisted him in this book. In it he says"Dream big, Dreaming small is a crime".

I think the most simple health tip is to move around always. Try to move your body. This will enhance the blood circulation and rejuvanate your personality. This is a positive gesture also. Movement is the indication of the energy level in us. 'Athazham kazhinjal Arakkatham' an ancient telling in our place. That means you have to walk small distance after the supper.

Some people after retirement will do nothing and become a permanant viewer of Television.

Do not sit in front of the TV more than 10 minutes
Try to climb steps rather than elevator
Play with your child
If you have nothing to do simply walk
If you have no yard and no garden walk inside the rooms
Try to remove the leaves in the yard one by one

Uluva-medicinal value behind the bitterness

Uluva-Fenu greek or methi.
Uluva is a familiar spice for everyone. In my childhood days I disliked its taste. But after my first delivery I heard a lot of advice about uluvakanji and uluva unda etc. I hadnot eaten the uluva kanji but I think it energises our bones and strengthens them after delivery.

Uluva is rich with Iron. It is an effective remedy to fight anemic problems in adolescent girls.
Uluva has a lot of Calcium content also. It rejuvanates the bones and reduces the pain and mental strain during menstration.
Diabetis patients can take uluva as a medicine. It stabilises the sugar level.
Uluva helps to reduce the cholestrol level in your blood
It contains a lot of fibres which helps the digestion.
Mothers feeding the children must use uluva leaves. It has a lot of fatty acids which nourishes the brain power of your child.
It is a remedy for dandruff too. Keep the uluva in water for some time. Make it a paste. Apply it to your head.

Every day I use Uluva to garnish the Morukari or Pulissery. Uluva powder is used in Pickles and in sambar. You can add some uluva to the rice for Idli or dosha. It will become more soft.
